Nayib Bukele and Bitcoin

This is the story of Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador. In 2021, as one of Bukele’s intiatives, El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. Bukele gave citizens of El Salvador $30 worth of Bitcoin that they could spend via the Chiva App and Chiva wallets. Restaurants and shops were instructed to accept payments in Bitcoin. In an extremely bold and courageous move for a political leader Bukele started using the country’s money to invest directly in Bitcoin in the hope of making a profit. He received considerable criticism from around the world for doing so but at the time of writing (December 2023) this has proven to be a successful move.

Will Mount Gox Change the Price of Bitcoin?

Mount Gox (Mt.Gox)

This is the story of Mount Gox, one of the earliest Cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Mount Gox was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 2010 by Mark Karpelès and at one stage it was handling 80% of all worldwide Bitcoin transactions. Unfortunately in 2014 Mount Gox was forced to close its website down because it had been hacked and 800,000 Bitcoins had been stolen.

However, after a protracted legal battle with Japanese authorities that lasted nine years and many attempts to recover Bitcoins on behalf of his customers Karpelès is now able to offer 10,000 Mount Gox customers a refund in Bitcoin. As you imagine Bitcoin has increased in price a lot since 2014.

$200 million of Bitcoin

This is the story of James Howells, a Welsh guy and IT specialist from Newport who accidentally threw away a computer hard drive containing 7500 Bitcoins or $200 million of Bitcoin in today’s market. In many ways James was a pioneer, he was one of the first people in Britain to mine Bitcoin using a computer and that is how he amassed 7500 Bitcoins.

In 2013 James accidentally threw away his hard drive, there’s actually more to the story than that as I reveal in the video. Please watch the video to discover the full story and the efforts that James has made to retrieve his hard drive.
